Healthcare Providers Advocacy in Virginia

We are thrilled to introduce you to Advocates for Orthopaedic Manual Therapy & Pelvic Health Inc., a newly launched nonprofit designed with the mission to educate patients and promote awareness of regulations used in our day-to-day practice of manual therapy and pelvic health, to hold regulatory boards accountable, and to provide more protection for licensees.

The Virginia Board of Physical Therapy in conjunction with the Commonwealth of Virginia has ruled the standard treatment protocol that is taught in school and accredited continuing education when treating pelvic floor dysfunction is now considered sexual. However, during their April 12th, 2024 meeting regarding their discussion of the practice of pelvic floor therapy and the definition of invasive procedure, the Board of Physical Therapy announced that they, do not know the meaning of pelvic floor therapy. Yet, they have sanctioned one of their licensees without understanding the proper procedures. The Board of Physical Therapy claimed themselves as experts to justify their denial of the licensee's actual pelvic floor therapy expert witnesses and for the failure to provide any of their own.

The Board of Physical Therapy has ignored the standards of practice, manual therapy, pelvic floor curriculum taught throughout the Commonwealth, evidence-based research, sworn testimony by the claimants, and exculpatory evidence that all favors the licensee.

This is a call for action to all healthcare providers, to help us with our mission in educating and bringing awareness to specialized medical treatments that benefit all patients. Patients should have the right to see the provider of their choice.

The Case for Legislative Reform in Pelvic Health

Effective legislation is the bridge between clinical expertise and public safety. In the specialized field of manual therapy, clear policy ensures that patients receive evidence-based care while practitioners are protected by recognized standards of practice.

Defining Scope of Practice

We advocate for legal frameworks that accurately reflect the advanced training required for pelvic health providers, preventing regulatory overlap that diminishes the quality of specialized care.

Insurance Recognition & Access

Legislation plays a critical role in ensuring insurance codes are updated to recognize manual therapy protocols, making restorative treatment financially accessible for all patients.

Clinical Accountability

By codifying evidence-led safety standards into law, we protect the public from substandard care and ensure the long-term integrity of the manual therapy profession.
